Brazilian Fashion

When the Portuguese first set foot on Brazilian soil, the native fashion was quite bare and raw: a sort of bikini made of clay and lots of jewellery...

The garment was either plain or painted with geometric motifs and tied around the waist with a piece of string. The jewellery, made out of feathers and seeds, decorated forearms and ankles. The Indian woman had a natural charm: she wore her hair down, went around barefoot, and only made herself up for special occasions.

Five hundred years later, much of this native woman is still reflected in present-day Brazilian women: the tendency to have long hair and to wear it down, the naturalness with which they show off their bodies - be it on the beach, in minute thongs, or in the clothes they wear, which reveal more than they conceal - or the languid and sensual way in which they walk into the sea.

Brazilian women today, north and south of the country, survive with four basic pieces: a pair of jeans, a T-shirt, flip-flops and a bikini - notwithstanding the lure of designer clothes... made in Brazil.
